Pray For Beirut Pakistan Stands With Lebanon
The whole world is fighting against COVID-19, the power of our response is defining how many people stay safe and healthy. An increase in demand for medical supplies, testing, social distancing, and personal sacrifices are all vital to follow.
Our focus on the recent pandemic situation, however, shouldn’t allow us to overlook the consequences that closed offices, schools, and businesses. Several hospitals are having on people’s long term education, health, and incomes, particularly those less fortunate. The natural crisis affects us all, but they often affect more to those people who have fewer resources.
Closed schools and universities are arranging online classes for students. But some parents, officials, and education experts say that many children don’t have a computer, stable internet connection, or even a comfortable place to learn. For some students, the summer slide could last for six months and it’s also affecting education.
Health and medicine sectors are at the top of our minds nowadays, and rightfully so. But how many people are avoiding necessary doctor’s visits for chronic conditions? How will mental health be affected by isolation, lost wages, and anxiety about the COVID-19 pandemic? These possible issues will manifest themselves soon.
Reduced wages and lay-offs are affecting people’s lives as they’re unable to meet their basic needs. Workers are looking to make rent payments and mortgage, pay for groceries, and medicines. Yet service workers, who earn less than experts, are most likely to lose their jobs. And minorities are less likely to have jobs where they can work from home.
COVID-19 is impacting our society’s inequalities and revealing incredible opportunity gaps. Is this all for now or the future too? We all need to understand the systems that are currently in place. The government is not only failing to provide masks and ventilators in affected areas, but they’re also not allowing people to make money. Stepping out for money will enable them to meet the expenses in case of a crisis.
As the entire world rapidly emerges from COVID-19, we can’t go back to a normal situation. No society will ever be perfectly equal, and rich and poor are exposed to this pandemic. But our inequality of opportunity is increasing the burden of this crisis.
