The entire world has come to a grounding halt as the corona-virus pandemic continues to spread. People are making huge sacrifices and changes to control the COVID-19. However, in many poor communities where compassion exists, prevention against corona-virus seems tough. And people living in poverty are far more vulnerable to any loss of income. Here are some reasons listed for people in poverty are more vulnerable to COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) people needs to maintain at least 3 feet (1 meter) distance between you and other people who are sneezing or coughing. Whereas, the United States Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends keeping a distance of approximately 6 feet (2 meters) from others.
Poor people often live in congested and small quarters and share their space with multiple family members. In many poor communities, it’s not uncommon for extended family to survive under one roof in small quarters, making social distancing challenging, if not impossible.
The WHO and CDC both recommend hand washing and other hygiene practices such as using masks and sanitizers to avoid the transmission of COVID-19 pandemic. Hygiene can be a challenge for a vulnerable population who might not have access to clean water, tissues, sanitizers, and alcohol-based cleaners. If COVID-19 remains on surfaces, sterilizing homes with dirt floors, inadequate ventilation or no running water could also be difficult.
As per the CDC and WHO, people should get medical help early when they notice symptoms of fever, cough, and difficult breathing. However, poor people have limited access to medical healthcare centers as compared to us. For people living in poverty, even the funds for transportation and proper medical checkup are out of reach sometimes. The providers may also burdened with affected people cases in the area or lack of ability to test for COVID-19 pandemic.
Governments all around the world are severely ordering workers to stay at home or work from home. However, due to the nature of work, many poor people are unable to work during the quarantine. If a person works in the agriculture or service sector and officially received orders to quarantine, he or she is unable to feed his/her family and fulfill basic needs such as food, medicine, and other items.
