The coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China, has now reached hundreds of countries and has started to take its toll in the USA. Is the USA prepared for this pandemic? How rapidly is Covid-19 spreading? Thousands of new cases are being reported across the globe each day, and the actual scale could be higher 10 times. There are almost 53,852 cases of a novel coronavirus in the USA and 728 victims with the virus have died.
The eruption of new cases, which is expected to continue growing in upcoming days, comes as private labs begin testing for coronavirus after weeks of delays and test kit shortages. New York City has been especially violent in testing, announced more than 4700 new cases on Tuesday.
The outbreak looks different in the United States than it did a couple of weeks ago. At the beginning of March 2020, with limited testing available, only 70 cases had been reported and most of the cases were due to overseas travel.
However, the number of known cases reached thousands and life across the country has drastically changed in profound ways. College quads and school grounds now stand deserted. Beauty salons and departmental stores also have been forced to close due to coronavirus. Basketball tournaments, baseball’s spring training, and concert tours have been called off.
President Donald Trump has claimed that the situation is under control. Whereas, the officials at Centres for Disease Control (CDC) warn the virus will spread and may drastically affect daily life. Relative to other countries fighting with coronavirus, the USA has done a handful of tests.
On 6 March, the president signed an $8.3bn emergency funding bill to develop a vaccine and help states fight against the virus. Plus, more of the half of US states have now reported cases of the sickness.
The USA consists of 331 million people, and CDC estimates that 40-70% of them will get infected with coronavirus, 20% need hospitalization, and 5-10% of people are going to need a ventilator. As per 5% of people, 7.5 million vents will be required in the USA. Let’s say, we have a total of 150,000 ventilators in the country, 0.02% of people could get a ventilator if needed. That means that 49 people out of 50 are gonna die. So, the doctors have to select who that 1 in 50 is. That’s scary!
Moreover, higher medical costs make the virus problematic and people avoid hospital visits due to unaffordable treatment. Mike Pence has announced that a group of major health insurance companies covering around 240 million people has agreed not to charge patients for coronavirus testing.
