What is COVID-19 and its current situation?
In December 2019, a new respiratory began to spread throughout Wuhan, China. The disease is known as COVID-19 that rapidly infected thousands of people over the ensuing weeks. Therefore, China imposed major restrictions on work and travel, and by the end of February, cases of COVID-19 had slowed inside China while emerging in other countries including Iran, the USA, and South Korea.
On 11 March 2020, the World Organization recognized COVID-19 as a global pandemic since 2009. In the beginning, it seems controlled inside China while it rapidly spreads in Europe and around the world. Many countries including France, Italy, and India have imposed restrictions on school, travel, and work to handle the outbreak.
How far will COVID-19 spread?
COVID-19 has become a global pandemic, and there’s no way to know how far it will spread. Daily routine in Europe and the United States has ground to a halt and social distancing measures have been imposed. Some experts believe that focus should now shift to slowing the virus rather than stopping it.
As with any pandemic, there’s a major concern that health workers will be infected. Around 3,300 health workers have been infected with COVID-19 in China, and 13 have died. This underscores the need for providing protective equipment such as suits, gloves, goggles to health workers. However, the best way to slow down the virus is to avoid public events, stay home, and wash your hands frequently.
Who is more at risk?
Specific groups are more at risk of COVID-19 than others, including older adults and those with a weak immune system. People who have chronic medical conditions such as heart problems, diabetes, and lung issues are more at risk of being infected.
Younger people are not immune from risk, however, a huge number of Americans have infected by the virus, and more than a third of hospitalized are younger than 55. In France and Netherland, half of the ICU is occupied with young people. Also, though young people are at low mortality risk from the virus, they can carry it even without knowing or showing symptoms.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
People infected with COVID-19 experience mild to severe respiratory illness, with symptoms including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Other symptoms are runny nose, sore throat, aches and pains, or diarrhea. It is also possible to have COVID-19 without showing all of these mentioned symptoms. Many people recover from the virus without any specific treatment, though older people and people with a compromised immune system are most at risk.
What is the best way to protect yourself?
Since there is no vaccine to control COVID-19, the best way to protect yourself from the illness is to avoid being exposed to it. This underscores the social distancing that cab prevents the virus from transmitting person to person. The major thing you can do is wash your hands frequently. Use sanitizer and mask before going out and avoid public gatherings. Moreover, maintain a 3-foot distance from a person and avoid close contact as much as possible.
